FEATURE // AIAIÉ - Zsanett Hegedűs . FASHION DESIGNER

Our feature today is the SS15 collection of AIAIÉ, by their head designer Zsanett Hegedűs. The European Bauhaus movement inspired the pieces showing the double shadows of the silver age of the 30s, saluting the work of Kertész, Moholy-Nagy and Munkácsi.

The Hungarian eye – does this idea exist in European culture at all? Presumably not, but specifically Central-European careers do unequivocally exist. Kertész, Moholy-Nagy, Munkácsi. Irreplaceable, exquisite, creative eyes. The sensuous imprint of reality through a unique optic. Light created by darkness, shadows defining bodies, the reorganization of our known world in the pay of an ideal. The learning from opportunities of a lifetime, lost forever. Shadowgraph.

The 30s was the silver age. We move together with Europe, fit among the puzzle pieces of intellectual life. What we create is world-class level with a double shadow behind it. A specific Central-European start, however, the melancholic relationship with roots always overshadows the recognition of excellence. Born as extraordinary, fighting for your success, but never forgetting where you come from.

The SHADOWGRAPH collection is an exhortative imprint of this double shadow. The architectural, photographic and sartorial sophistication gives a precise description of the era. It is not narrative but disturbing, it does not quote correctly but makes you give answers.

"The starting point for the inspiration was a fantastically organized exhibition in Balatonfüred, in the Vaszary Villa. It introduced André Kerétsz’s career path, thematically, with original photos. It was most likely this exhibition that worked in me when I chose Hungarian photographers as a subject, and an era when they took their most iconic photographs, between 1930 and 1950. This inspiration line was strengthened by a Munkácsy exhibition at Ludwig, and Blumenfeld’s exhibition at the Somerset House. They used light and shadows, viewpoints, interconnecting ideas and composition in a way that marked an era. Logically, Moholy-Nagy and the Bauhaus movement was associated with them in me, and this became more and more accentuated with time,” says Zsanett about the collection. “To position myself in the aspect of the great ones, to draw an instructive picture with my own means was a real challenge for me. The perfect lines of fine cut continuously cross the haute couture world of shadows and lens projections, creating the shadowgraph of my thoughts about the silver era, which seems to be imaginary and unreal by now.”

The SHADOWGRAPH collection debuted on the runway of Vancouver Fashion Week in September 2014. VOGUE chose 15 from the 70 designers, AIAIÉ among them, the runway photos of which were published on Vogue.uk and Glamour.uk as well.

Get a first glance into the top womens’ and mens’ graphic trends for Spring/Summer 16 as forecasted by Fashion Snoops. From Asian influences within Japonism to the evolution of the Arts and Crafts movement in Chintz, the imagery is vast and inspiring for women. From a recent trip to Iceland, to a love of hand drawn conversationals - novelists, artists and destinations have all been part of our research, strengthening each call out for men this season.

We have compiled this information into a special report for Fashion Vignette members, courtesy of Fashion Snoops – where the full report is available exclusively to subscribers. The full version of the trend report is available now for individual purchase in the Fashion Vignette Trend Shop.

   S/S 16 WOMENS' FORECASTED GRAPHICS
We have brought together the strongest pattern expressions for Women for Spring 16. From Asian influences within Japonism to the evolution of the Arts and Crafts movement within Chintz, the imagery is vast and inspiring.

    CHINTZ
Chintz in the past has been used to describe, cheap and gaudy imagery, but this is certainly not the case here. We were Inspired by old wallpaper designs, authentic Chintz florals and English textile designer Charles Voysey is our main inspiration. The designs are simplified versions of the expected William Morris, as the background is cleaner, and the designs are flat in color and obviously heavily repeated.

    FIGHTING CHANCE
Fighting chance is our athletic graphic expression, as we see go-faster stripes, way finder imagery and logos suitable to the boxing ring. The colors are equally sporty.

    LINEAR LANDSCAPE
Linear Landscape is a new expression, as we see illustrated lines hinting or suggesting where the lines of the landscape lie. We are especially enthralled by the sense of movement and fluidity within this trend. The color palette is exceptionally soft, as this expression will sit within a Zen like women’s trend- Retreat.

    NATURE'S LENS
Within Natures lens we dust off our magnifying glass and take a close up look at the beauty that Mother Nature has to offer. Butterflies and bugs sit contently with imagery mimicking a micro-organism or bacteria, as well as zoomed in leaves and under water foliage.

    PSYCHEDLIC DREAM
Psychedelic tie dyes and trippy verbiage come together with even more intense and fun florals as we imagine a teenagers wildest imagination, and the subsequent colorful world. Authentic 70s graphic posters are particularly inspiring!

    S/S 16 MENS' FORECASTED GRAPHICS
For Spring 2016 we have brought together the thirteen strongest expressions, inspired by the runway, our current surroundings and what is particularly inspiring us right now. From a recent trip to Iceland, to a love of hand drawn conversationals - novelists, artists and destinations have all been part of our research, strengthening each call out.

    BOTANY STUDY
As many plants are essential foundations for life sources, we research into their growth, needs and exceptional beauty. Botanical illustrations are key as we now look at the florals in a scientific manner. Sketched imagery of other wildlife such as bugs and butterflies also comes into play as the color palette is natural with brown undertones.

    NATURE'S PERSPECTIVE
Awe-inspiring landscapes tell a colorful story. Tapestries sit with aerial photo real shots of desert islands and more abstract versions of water and natural surface texture. An editors recent trip to Iceland has particularly inspired, not the icy mountains that you’d expect but the rural colorful countryside with deep shadows from the lava fields.

    RORSCHACH TEST
Named after a test used to analyze a patient’s state of mind, this theme challenged us to question what we were looking at. The abstract collection of ink drops found on a Rorschach Test, are minimal in color and enigmatic, as we also look at brain scans and imagery which can be mimicked into this shape.

    SCRAPBOOK COLLAGE
Scrapbook Collage is all about hand crafting the collage, ignoring the digital talents and working with paper, scissors and tape. It’s a modern evolution of Dadaism. We were inspired particularly by Raf Simons, who literally laid out his life on the back of oversized sailor collars. This personal quality is something to be admired as he showcased images of his parents, photographs from family vacations and even his passport photo adorns a simple button down.

    GLITCH
This theme consists of images or patterns that have somehow been distorted by a computer glitch or a rogue frequency disruption. This expression combines and shows the evolution of optical illusions and digitally engineered blurred graphics creating a new image. Artist Nicholas Ballesteros has been a key inspiration.

CREATIVE BRIEF

Submission Deadline: 15 March, 2015, 6pm CET
Voting Starts: 16 March, 2015, 6pm CET

It’s a little guilty pleasure of ours to every now and then open up the Front Row Society archives and browse through the fantastic range of patterns and prints you guys have been creating for us since we launched our very first design challenge. And what a feast for the eyes it is, from bold geometric graphics, to delicate floral etchings, and covering every imaginable style in between: tribal, watercolor, embroidery, iconography, and much much more.

So this month, we've decided to celebrate everything that we do best here at Front Row Society with our “Print Party” design challenge. You heard us, we’re not just looking for single prints this time – we want to see you go all out with designs that feature a wonderful clash of patterns and colors. Take inspiration from the history of print and try to mix old and new styles, like a classic floral pattern contrasted with an ultra modern geometric design.

What can you win?

Each winner receives a one-off prize of 200€ once the collection launches on the website plus a sample of their products when it arrives in stock. But that is not all – if your design receives 500 orders on wholesale, you will receive an additional €200.
